Building or maintaining a CNC router: where to start
To get started in engraving, an assembled machine like the CNC 3018 PRO (300x180 mm work area) can mill wood, plastic and PCB, and some versions add a laser module. For engraving and surface cutting only, a laser engraver such as the AtomStack A5 or TwoTrees TTS-55 works without mechanical cutting force: here you choose based on the work area and the stated optical power.
If you are building your own machine, the chain to follow is always the same: frame, guidance, transmission, motors, drivers, controller.
- Frame and guidance: profiles and rails in V-Slot and linear rails, 625ZZ V-wheel bearings, plates and supports.
- Transmission: 2GT-6 mm belt, 5x8 mm couplers and pulleys; fasten with parts from screws, nuts and spacers.
- Motors: NEMA 17 or NEMA 23 mounts, TB6600, DM556 or DM860H drivers depending on the motor current — the driver must handle the current per phase, not the other way around.
- Control: 5-axis interface board for MACH3 (USB or DB25) and limit switches.
To drill your PCBs, carbide bits and drills are available from 0.6 to 3 mm: keep several diameters on hand, as carbide is precise but brittle.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a CNC 3018 and a laser engraver?
The CNC 3018 uses a rotary spindle with a cutting bit: it removes material in depth, so it mills and cuts wood, plastic or PCB. The laser engraver burns the surface, engraving faster and finer but it does not cut pockets and cannot work bare metal.
How do I choose between TB6600, DM556 and DM860H?
The choice depends on the current and voltage of your stepper motors. The TB6600 suits small NEMA 17 and modest NEMA 23 motors, the DM556 suits more demanding NEMA 23 motors, and the DM860H suits large NEMA 23/34 motors under heavy load.
What drill diameter should I use to drill a PCB?
Most resistors, capacitors and connector pins fit between 0.8 and 1 mm; terminal blocks and screw mounts need 1.1 to 1.3 mm, and some power components go up to 2 or 3 mm. Having three or four common diameters covers almost all boards.
Are spare parts for CNC routers and 3D printers available in Algeria?
Yes, the usual consumables and wear parts can be found here: 0.2 and 0.3 mm nozzles for 1.75 mm filament, PC4-M6 pneumatic fittings, 2GT belt, V-wheel bearings, couplers and MK2A heated beds.
What makes the price of a CNC machine vary?
The work area, frame rigidity, spindle or laser power, and the control electronics. An assembled machine costs more than a set of parts to build yourself, but requires fewer adjustments at the start.
