Technical summary
The micro:bit V2 is a development board created to promote programming in education. It is very easy to use, yet it can also be integrated into complex applications.
- Features: this version features more RAM and more Flash memory, but also a mini speaker, a microphone, a capacitive touch push button and a more powerful CPU compared with the V1. Like its previous version, it has two push buttons, a 5x5 LED matrix, 22 pins including 3 analog ones, an accelerometer, a magnetometer and a Bluetooth 5.0 module.
- Connectivity: the edge connector lets you connect the board to sensors, actuators or to other microprocessor boards (Arduino, Raspberry, etc.). The pins are located at the bottom of the board:
- 3 analog inputs/outputs marked 0, 1 and 2, as well as the 3V and GND pins. These pins are easily accessible with banana plugs or crocodile clips.
- the rest of the pins are not accessible as such and require the use of a specific connector (EDGE connector), found in particular on the various modules. - Programming: programming is done from a web browser via theMakeCode IDE for beginners, or in JavaScript or MicroPython for more experienced users. The program is downloaded from the online IDE and simply copied onto the micro:bit as onto a USB flash drive (micro-USB cable not included).
Bluetooth also allows programming from a smartphone or a tablet via an app for iOS and Android.
Programs in .HEX format created for the micro:bit V1 are fully compatible with this new version. The Makecode IDE takes care of converting them for compatibility with this V2.
