How to choose the right lab power supply
A lab power supply is chosen first by its voltage / current pair. The 15V 2A models (YAXUN YX-1502DD+, Yaogong YG-1502DD, KADA 1502DS+) are enough for small boards, sensors or phone repair work. The 30V 5A models (YAXUN YX-305D, AIDA 3005D+, MECHANIC M3005D+) cover most workshop tasks, and the 30V 10A models (SUNSHINE P-3010D, Zhaoxin RXN-3010D, MCP 10M-QS3010, UNI-T UTP1310) handle motors, LED strips and demanding loads. For high continuous power, the PS3030 and PS6015 switching power supplies reach higher current or voltage.
- Current limiting (CC): set it before connecting, this is what protects a board in case of a short circuit. The switch from CV mode to CC mode is indicated on the unit.
- Display: separate voltage and current displays avoid reading mistakes; a fine resolution (such as 2mA) helps spot abnormal consumption.
- Linear or switching: linear is cleaner and quieter in terms of electrical noise, switching gives more power for a smaller footprint.
- Programmable: useful if you repeat the same settings, as on the M3005D+.
To calculate the expected current of a load before setting the limit, use the Ohm's Law calculator. See also the Power supplies category for fixed units and modules.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a linear and a switching power supply?
A linear power supply regulates by dissipation: very clean output, low noise, but heavy and limited in power. A switching power supply such as the PS3030 or PS6015 delivers much more power for the same size, with a bit more electrical noise and a fan.
Which power supply should I choose for phone repair?
A 15V 2A model with a fine current display works well: the required voltage is low, and it is the precise reading of consumption that lets you diagnose a short circuit. The YX-1502DD+, YG-1502DD or 1502DS+ fall into this category.
What is the constant current (CC) mode for?
It caps the delivered current: beyond the set value, the power supply lowers the voltage instead of forcing it. It protects your boards and it is also what lets you charge a battery or drive a high-power LED.
30V 5A or 30V 10A, how to decide?
Count the maximum consumption of your load and keep a margin of about 30%. For development boards, audio or signal electronics, 5A is enough; for motors, pumps or long LED strips, go with 10A.
What makes the price of a lab power supply vary?
Mainly the output power (voltage × current), linear or switching technology, the accuracy and resolution of the display, the presence of programmable memories, and the brand.
