Choosing the right diameter and type of sleeve

Heat-shrink tubing slides onto the wire before soldering, then shrinks under heat to insulate and stiffen the joint. The 2:1 ratio means it shrinks to half its size: a 6 mm sleeve comes down to about 3 mm. Choose a diameter slightly larger than the part to be covered, but not too large: if the sleeve stays loose after heating, it protects nothing.

  • 1 to 3 mm: thin wires, component leads, earphone or data cable repairs.
  • 4 to 6 mm: power wires, sensor junctions, JST connectors.
  • 8 to 10 mm: heavier gauge cables, harnesses, battery outputs.
  • Assorted kits (1 to 10 mm, in boxes of several hundred pieces): handy for a workshop where diameters vary.

The PVC sleeves for 18650 are different: these are flat, wide wraps, sold sized to the pack (2, 3, 4 or 6 cells) or by the meter, to re-wrap a cell whose casing is damaged or to insulate an assembled pack. PVC shrinks at a lower temperature than polyolefin, so a hair dryer is often enough. For standard tubing, a heat gun gives a more even result than a lighter, which blackens the surface. The rest of the wiring supplies can be found in Wires, cables and accessories.

Frequently asked questions

What does the 2:1 ratio mean?

It is the shrink ratio: the sleeve shrinks down to half its original diameter under heat. A 4 mm sleeve will neatly cover a junction roughly between 2 and 3.5 mm.

What diameter for a wire solder joint?

Pick a diameter that slides easily over the thickest part (the solder joint, the connector) and that grips the wire once shrunk. For common wiring, 3 mm and 5 mm cover most cases.

What is the difference between 2:1 tubing and 18650 PVC sleeving?

The 2:1 tubing is tube-shaped and used to insulate wires and solder joints. The 18650 PVC sleeve is a flat, wide wrap meant to re-cover a cell or a multi-cell pack.

Can it be shrunk without a heat gun?

Yes, a powerful hair dryer or a soldering iron tip held at a distance works fine on small diameters, and 18650 PVC reacts very quickly. Avoid a direct flame, which burns the sleeve before it shrinks evenly.

Why do prices vary so much from one sleeve to another?

It depends on the sales format (by the meter or in an assorted kit), the diameter, the wall thickness and the material, polyolefin or PVC. A multi-diameter kit does not compare well with a length bought by the meter.
