Technical summary
The 4017 integrated circuit is a 5-stage Johnson decade counter. It has 3 inputs (clock, enable and reset) and ten outputs (Q0 to Q9). Only one of the outputs can be active at a given moment. The outputs are activated sequentially (that is, one after the other) on each clock pulse. An additional CO/ output allows circuits to be chained one after the other in order to increase the total number of outputs.
