Choosing your components without going wrong
A component is chosen first by its package. Through-hole (DO-35 for a 1N4148, DO-214 for a 1N4007, 0.25 W carbon film resistor) for a breadboard, a perforated board or a solder joint that is easy to redo. In SMD (0402, 0603, 0805, 1206) for an industrial board or an identical repair: note the code printed on the board before ordering, since size governs power dissipation, from 1/10 W in 0603 to 1/4 W in 1206.
Next come the electrical values, and some margin should be kept:
- Resistors: value, power and tolerance (±5% for carbon film or J series, ±1% for F series for a divider or a current measurement). The Ohm's Law calculator helps check the power dissipated.
- Capacitors: capacitance, rated voltage and dielectric. An X7R (100 nF 50 V) stays stable with temperature; a Y5V of the same value drifts a lot and mainly suits non-critical decoupling; a C0G/NP0 (22 pF) is used in crystal oscillators.
- Diodes and transistors: reverse voltage and maximum current, with at least double the circuit voltage.
- Relays: coil voltage (12 V, 24 V) and contact switching capacity.
To drive them, see the microcontrollers and power regulators categories; for a timer or a flasher, the NE555 Timer calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an X7R capacitor and a Y5V of the same value?
The X7R dielectric keeps a capacitance close to its rated value over a wide range of temperature and voltage. The Y5V starts from the same rated value but can lose a large part of its capacitance when heated or under voltage, which limits it to simple decoupling.
How do I know which SMD size to pick for a repair?
Measure the footprint on the board or compare with a neighboring component: a 0603 measures about 1.6 × 0.8 mm, an 0805 about 2 × 1.25 mm. Also match the same voltage and the same tolerance as the original.
±5% or ±1% for my resistors?
±5% is enough for an LED, a pull-up or a transistor base. Move to ±1% for a voltage divider, a reference, a current-sense shunt or a regulation loop where the deviation directly affects the result.
Why do two resistors of the same value not cost the same?
Tolerance, temperature coefficient, package, brand and packaging (single unit or full reel) all affect the cost. A low-drift ±1% series costs more than a ±5% carbon film one.
Can I pick up my order on site?
Yes, pickup is available at the store in Bab Ezzouar, Algiers.
