Choosing the right sensor

The first criterion is the output type. An analog sensor like the LM35DZ or an LDR module returns a voltage to be read on an ADC input: simple, but you need to match the voltage range, sometimes with a voltage divider. A digital sensor (DHT11, DHT22, DS18B20 on 1-Wire, MPU6050 or BMP280 on I2C) sends an already converted value and connects on two or three pins, with a library on the code side.

Next, check the supply voltage and logic level: many modules accept 3.3 V and 5 V, but an ESP32 running at 3.3 V does not like a direct 5 V output. For temperature measurement, a waterproof DS18B20 suits a liquid or outdoor use, while a type K thermocouple with a MAX6675 reaches much higher, for an oven or a soldering iron.

Also consider the wiring: a bare A3144 or SS41F needs a pull-up resistor, while a module already includes the conditioning circuitry and a status LED. The rest of the range is in Sensors and robotics.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between DHT11 and DHT22?

Both measure temperature and humidity on a single digital pin, but the DHT22 covers a wider range and gives finer resolution, with a stated accuracy of ± 0.5 °C. The DHT11 is enough for a learning project or an ambient display.

Which sensor should I choose to measure distance?

The HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor is the most common and works well on hard surfaces from a few centimeters to a few meters. The VL53L0X, a laser time-of-flight sensor, is more accurate at short range and insensitive to the shape of the obstacle, but is hindered by glass and direct sunlight.

How do you measure a rotation speed?

An optical fork encoder such as the ITR9608 or TCST2103 counts the slots of a disc passing between the emitter and the receiver. A Hall effect sensor (A3144, SS41F) does the same job with a magnet on the shaft, and is more resistant to dust.

Is a linear Hall effect sensor the same as a threshold Hall sensor?

No. The SS49E is linear: its analog output varies with the strength of the magnetic field, useful for measurement. The A3144 and SS41F switch on or off once the field exceeds a threshold, which suits counting and position detection.

What makes the price of a sensor vary?

Accuracy and measurement range, the presence of conditioning electronics and factory calibration, the housing (bare, waterproof, metal probe), and the brand of the internal component. An industrial pressure sensor and a beginner's module are not in the same category.
