Choosing between ESP32 and ESP8266

The ESP8266 (NodeMCU, D1 Mini, ESP8266-01) brings Wi-Fi to a simple microcontroller: ideal for sending sensor readings to a server or driving a relay. The ESP32 adds a second core, Bluetooth (classic and BLE), more GPIO, a multi-channel analog converter and capacitive touch. If your project needs Bluetooth, handles several tasks or requires many inputs/outputs, go with ESP32; otherwise the ESP8266 is more than enough.

  • Form factor and USB: ESP32 WROOM-32 boards come in 30 or 38 pins, with Type C or Micro USB port, and CP2102 or CH340 serial chip — check which driver is installed on your PC.
  • Bare modules vs boards: ESP8266-01 and ESP32-WROOM-32UE SMD require an adapter or soldering; NodeMCU and Wemos boards plug directly in via USB.
  • Power supply: during Wi-Fi transmission, the current peak is high; a computer USB port can cause the board to restart. Use a proper 5 V supply and a decoupling capacitor.
  • Long-range radio: TTGO LoRa32 and Heltec SX1262 boards combine ESP32 and LoRa for links beyond Wi-Fi.

The pins run at 3.3 V: a sensor or display running at 5 V needs a level adapter. For easier wiring, a 38-pin I/O expansion board saves you from using a breadboard. The rest of the boards are in Development boards.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ESP32 and ESP8266?

The ESP32 is dual-core, with Bluetooth and BLE, more GPIO and analog inputs. The ESP8266 only has Wi-Fi and fewer usable pins, but remains sufficient for a simple connected device.

Should I get a 30-pin or 38-pin ESP32?

The 38-pin version exposes more GPIO and the pins connected to the internal flash, useful when the project has many sensors. The 30-pin version is more compact and fits better on a breadboard.

Can an ESP32 be programmed with the Arduino IDE?

Yes, by adding ESP32 or ESP8266 board support in the board manager. MicroPython and ESP-IDF are also common options.

What makes the price of an ESP32 vary?

The amount of flash memory, the presence of an IPEX antenna connector, the addition of a display, LoRa, Ethernet or a 4G modem, as well as the USB-serial chip used.

How can I pick up my order in Algiers?

You can collect it in-store in Bab Ezzouar, or get same-day delivery for orders placed before 3 PM, otherwise within 24 to 48 hours.
