Which Arduino board to choose
The choice first depends on the number of inputs/outputs and the space available in the setup. The UNO R3 remains the reference for beginners: wide format, spaced pins, compatible with most shields. The NANO covers the same ATmega328 microcontroller in a format that fits on a breadboard or solders directly into an enclosure; it comes in USB type C or micro-USB versions, with pins soldered or unsoldered depending on whether you prefer to solder it yourself.
For a project that requires many pins — displays, numerous sensors, driving stepper motors with a RAMPS 1.4 shield or a CNC V3 shield — the MEGA 2560 is the right choice. The DUE and the M0 move to a 32-bit core at 3.3 V, useful when processing power or memory become limiting; in that case pay attention to sensor voltage, as their inputs do not tolerate 5 V.

What is the difference between an original Arduino board and a compatible one?
The original is manufactured by Arduino, while the compatible board (or clone) uses the same design and the same microcontroller, and works with the same IDE and the same code. The difference lies in the finish, the regulator and the USB chip: some compatible boards use a CH340, which requires installing its driver.
Should I choose the NANO with soldered or unsoldered pins?
Soldered pins if you plug the board into a breadboard or header socket right away. Unsoldered if you want to solder it flat into a thin enclosure or use only some of the pins.
Does a UNO shield work on a MEGA 2560?
Mechanically yes, the MEGA matches the UNO pinout on its first row. The shield works if its library handles the MEGA's SPI pins, which are not at the same numbers; shields that hard-wire pins 10 to 13 may require a jumper.
Why do two identical Arduino boards not have the same price?
The price depends on the origin (original Arduino board or compatible), the microcontroller and the onboard connectivity: a board with Wi-Fi or a 32-bit core costs more than a standard UNO R3.
