Choosing the right cooling fan

Three pieces of information appear in the fan name: the voltage, the size and the current. Start with the voltage available in your setup: 12VDC and 24VDC are the most common in electronics and industrial cabinets, 48VDC is found on telecom equipment, and 220/240V models like the Tidar or the Fristar connect directly to mains power. A 12V fan powered at 24V burns out; at 12V in place of 24V, it spins slowly or does not start.

Size is given in millimeters of side length and thickness: 40x40x10 mm for a small board or a tight enclosure, 80x80x25 mm for a cabinet, 120x120x38 mm for a large airflow. At equal voltage, a higher current (0.5 A or 1.5 A versus 0.08 A) means more airflow and more noise.

  • 2 wires: red and black, simple power supply, fixed speed.
  • 3 wires: an extra tachometer wire, to read the speed.
  • 4 wires: PWM speed control, as on Delta, AVC and Nidec models.
  • Ball bearing: better performance in continuous and hot operation than a sleeve bearing.

For quick connections, 2-pin JST BEC connectors avoid soldering. If the hot spot remains a specific component, also check the heatsinks and fuses.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 2-wire, 3-wire and 4-wire fan?

The 2-wire version only receives power and spins at a fixed speed. The 3-wire version adds a tachometer output that reports the rotation speed. The 4-wire version adds a PWM input that lets a board or motherboard control the speed.

Can I connect a 12VDC fan to 24V?

No, it will be destroyed quickly. Choose a 24VDC model instead, or a DC-DC step-down converter to go from 24V to 12V before the fan.

Which fan for an electrical cabinet or enclosure?

An 80x80x25 mm or a 120x120 mm model depending on the volume and the heat to remove. Measure the existing grille opening and choose the voltage available in the enclosure: 12VDC, 24VDC or directly 220/240V.

Why do fan prices vary so much?

The bearing type (ball bearing or sleeve bearing), the size, the airflow, the number of wires and the brand all make a difference. A tested used model costs less than a new branded ball-bearing one.

Can I see the fans in person before buying?

Yes, pickup and purchase are done at the store in Bab Ezzouar, Algiers.
