Choosing between Raspberry Pi and Raspberry Pi Pico
Two very different families share the same name. A Raspberry Pi (Pi 3 Model B, Pi 4 Model B, Pi 5) is a complete computer running Linux: it boots from a microSD card, drives a display, network, USB, and suits a server, a media center, computer vision or a light workstation. A Raspberry Pi Pico (RP2040) or a Pico 2 (RP2350) is a microcontroller: no operating system, you flash a program onto it in MicroPython or C, it boots instantly and draws very little power. For reading sensors, driving motors or replacing an Arduino board, the Pico is enough.
- RAM: on the Pi 5, 4GB covers most uses; go for 8GB or 16GB if you compile code, run containers or several browser tabs.
- Power supply: the Pi 5 needs a 5.1 V / 5 A (27 W) USB-C adapter. A phone charger causes reboots and undervoltage.
- Cooling: the Pi 5 heats up under load, hence the official case with built-in fan.
- Wireless connectivity: the Pico W adds Wi-Fi to the RP2040, the base Pico does not have it.
Also think about peripherals: a microSD card, a micro-HDMI cable for the Pi 4 and Pi 5, a CSI camera for vision projects. The Pi 400 and Pi 500 build the board directly into a keyboard. See also the category Raspberry and others for related boards.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5?
The Pi 5 is noticeably faster in CPU and I/O, and it uses a 5 V / 5 A USB-C power supply instead of 3 A. Cases and fans are not interchangeable between the two, and the Pi 5 needs active cooling under sustained load.
Can the Raspberry Pi Pico replace an Arduino?
Yes for most projects: the RP2040 is faster and has more memory than an ATmega328, and it is programmed in MicroPython or C/C++. Watch out for the 3.3 V logic level, which sometimes requires a level adapter with 5 V modules.
Is the official adapter required for the Pi 5?
You need a source able to supply 5.1 V at 5 A over USB-C, and the official 27 W adapter matches exactly that profile. With less current, the Pi limits power to the USB ports and may reboot randomly.
How much RAM should you choose on a Pi 5?
4GB is enough for a server, home automation or light office use. Move up to 8GB or 16GB for compiling, containers, databases or image processing.
What makes the price of a Raspberry Pi board vary?
Mainly the model and the amount of RAM, then the accessories needed: a suitable power supply, case, microSD card, micro-HDMI cable. A Pico costs much less than a Pi 5 because it is not a complete computer.
